Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize Laureates Academic Exchange Program “Myths Embodied in Laotian Textiles: The Meaning and Future of Naga Patterns”
JR Hakata City 10F Large Conference RoomWe will hold a lecture by past recipients of the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize.
The “Naga” (dragon deity) motif, which appears repeatedly in traditional Laotian textiles, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2023. In this lecture, the speaker—who has long been involved in promoting Laotian textile culture—will explore the meaning and cultural background of the Naga while tracing the journey leading to its inscription. What message does this motif, woven by Laotian women from the past to the future, convey to us today?
